Lucy and Ragil created the By Hand fair trade shop in 2009, motivated by a desire to spread the fair trade word and to help disadvantaged producers in Indonesia get their goods to market.
We are a member of the British Association for Fair Trade Shops (BAFTS) and are committed to the principles of fair trade, as described by the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO).
We work closely with Arum Dalu Mekar in Bali. Arum Dalu has been a member of the WFTO for many years now and does a fantastic job of promoting fair trade practices within Indonesia. It supports independent artisans in Bali, giving them an income that they can rely on over the long-term and promoting sustainable business practices that will give the individuals a secure future.
As an Indonesian himself, Ragil has a personal connection to the producers who supply By Hand. On a recent trip to Indonesia, Ragil visited a women’s cooperative in Yogyakarta, which produces a range of beautiful batik products. These women now supply By Hand with stunning scarves and, as a result, can enjoy increased revenues to support their families.
By Hand was created to help support disadvantaged producers in Indonesia, by paying them a fair wage, and by giving them a market for their handicrafts that will protect their livelihoods over the long term.
Our aim is to show that business can be ethical: we trade fairly and we act in a sustainable way, using recycled packaging and keeping our impact on the environment to a minimum.
We hope that you find something to inspire you on our website.
